After the networkmanager was removed, I rebooted and the wifi seems to be working. I ran the command urpme -a networkmanager, and 13 of 13 packages were uninstalled. I suppose I can live without Gnome, but I do like to have it. I am planning to contribute my development skills if I ever get some time away from my programming job.
